Assalam Alaikim Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It is our pleasure to write to you today to advise of a significant advocacy win for the Muslim Community.
Today, the federal government announced that January 29th will now be known as a National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.It came with this announcement from the Canadian Government:
“This tragedy reminds us of the urgency to stand up against these hateful acts and online radicalization. Our government intends to introduce new regulations to require online platforms to remove illegal and hateful content before it causes more harm and damage. It is through actions like this that we will make Canada a safer and more secure country.” The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage.
It also came in the same week that all Canadian political parties unanimously passed a resolution to call for the Proud Boys to be designated a terrorist organization.
Thank you to all of you that took the time to join this national advocacy initiative by writing in to our elected officials. There is certainly more work to be done, but today’s outcome is an important part of that ongoing journey.
