At the core of being a Muslim is to stand up for justice and against oppression of any kind. As such, we are devastated to hear the news of the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children, some as young as three years old, at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops. Our hearts ache at the thought of what happened to those dear children and our thoughts are with our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters, who have dealt with devastating oppression for far too many years. We support the need for, and call upon all levels of government in Canada to set aside partisan and jurisdictional squabbles to give full effect to all 94 of the Calls to Action from the Canada Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters in calling for a full investigation, justice and accountability with respect to residential schools in Canada. Canada must be a beacon of hope, standing against all forms of oppression and human rights abuses, both here and abroad. The unspeakable crimes that were perpetrated against Indigenous children and the long lasting scars that result from same require swift and transparent action and we stand in solidarity with our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters through this healing process.
